Sagebrush Buttercup

Picture
Ranunculus glaberrimus
Perenial Herb

Often the first flower to come out in the spring in the mountain west. It will appear amidst all the detritus of winter in mid-late march at medium high elevations.

DESCRIPTION:

This kind of buttercup grows close to the ground and is one of the first flowers to show up in mid-spring. It has multiple (often 6 or more) bright shiny yellow petals and a green center with jutting brighter yellow parts which sometimes cover the green center, making a yellow center.

WHOLE PLANT:

Stem
The flower grows from a very short stem, roughly an inch tall. The stems do not root from the nodes, they grow up from the leaves.
Leaves
The leaves are small and lance-like, growing in clusters around the stems.
Root
The roots grow to be fleshy and clustered.
WHERE TO FIND IT:

This flower grows in sunny meadows in early spring. Note the snow in the pictures bellow - this is one of the first flowers to come up in spring.
