The Rocky Mountain Horse is one of the most popular up-and-coming horse breeds in the U.S. today, and there's good reason for that. They are unusually safe, comfortable and people-oriented. They rarely spook and when they do they do it by freezing in place. These horses want to be with you as much as you want to be with them - they will leave their buddies and their food to follow you around the pasture all day while you fix fences. And they have the ability to move with a smooth fifth gait which allow their rider to fly down the trail at speed, without having to deal with the discomfort of a trot.

What They Do
Rockies can be found in many areas of equine sports. I have raised a number who have gone on to have great careers in Endurance Riding (though usually we like the Rocky/Arab crosses best for this, the right full blooded Rocky can do wonderfully as well.) They excel at Omoksee and parade work. The can do wonderfully in many areas of the show ring and can even excel at Dressage, if you can convinced the judges to accept a gaited horse into their competitions. They are used regularly to pull buggies and even light plows. But where the Rockies truly shine is as a trail horse. This is a horse made for the backcountry. They are sure footed, easy on the body, and unafraid in the face of river crossings, bears and steep mountain trails. We do extensive horse-packing in the backcountry wilderness areas of Montana and I have never found a better horse for the challenges this presents. If you want the best trail horse you've ever had, get a Rocky.
