Dog packing gear
preparing for horse packing the Pacific Crest Trail.
Gear is always about trade-offs. What photography gear to bring is especially about this. Photography is one of my biggest loves and something I want to be able to do when I am out on the trail. Ideally, I would have my full DSLR camera and multiple lenses, my GoPro with attachments and my phone. However, in reality, I am trying to travel very light and often need to make choices and leave some things home.
One of the advantages of the way I am organizing this trip is that I can likely to multiple passes over the same parts of the trail in the course of my stay at any one basecamp. Thus, I can plan some bare basics trips to get the lay of the land with nothing by my iPhone camera along. Then, if I want to, I can do a shorter trip to specific places with my big camera and really play. This will allow me to be flexible and adjust each excursion to what is ideal for me at the time.
In addition to enjoyment, I am also working hard to document this trip in a complete way so that it can be used as a guide by other people. Thus, some of the photo gear I take along may be needed for just this kind of thing.
