- Saddle - lightweight saddle that fits your horse and you perfectly
- saddle pad - use substantial pad. Long enough to extend behind the saddle far enough to be under the saddle bags and cantle bag and forward on withers so large horn and pommel bags won't rub him.

- crupper
- hackamore instead of bit so horse can graze more easily
- collapsible bucket
- nose feed bag
- 50 foot high-line rope with drop line or lead rope
- 2 tree savers, high-line bell
- neoprene hobbles
- bear bell for halter
- lightweight horse blanket for cold or rainy nights and for insects
- insect repellent
- leg protectors
- Grooming
- curry comb or glove

In general, horses are said to be able to carry about 20% of their body weight. This varies with terrain, pace and animal's conditioning. Plan shorter days after re-supply when your load is heaviest. Get off and walk sometimes to give your horse a break on difficult terrain.
