backpacking gear - General List
All gear has been chosen and tested with the goals of having as little as possible with me and making what I do have as lightweight as possible.
I have divided this into Essential and Optional gear, depending upon how minimalist I want to go on any given trip. For more guidance on what is essential gear, see the TEN ESSENTIALS list at the bottom of this page, compiled by mountaineers and used worldwide.

- Sleeping Pad: blow-up or another kind

- Bear Spray - no brand preference, just make sure you know how to use it and carry it on your person, not tucked away in your gear.

Ten Essentials - designed in the 1930s by The Mountaineers, these ten things are meant to answer the two basic questions: First, can you respond positively to an accident or emergency? Second, can you safely spend a night - or more - out?
