Horse Color

Horse Color Explained

Horse Color Genetics is one of my hobbies, and I love the science of it, but I will try to keep most of these pages simple for those of you who want to get the information quickly and not have to go through a semester's course worth of data!

When breeding a mare, one of the most exciting questions is: what color will your foal be? Some of that is a mystery only answerable by the birth, but a lot can be predicted. In fact, in some cases, if you choose the stallion with care, you can guarantee what color foal you will get!

Here is an outline of the information we provide on this topic:
  • What color will your foal be when breeding to our stallion?
  • Basics of Genetics - If you haven't already, start here for a quick 3-point lesson in genetics
  • Understanding The Basics of Horse Color Genetics - This is your next step in understanding horse color.
    • The Base Colors
    • The Special Colors
  • Horse Colors in Detail - Beyond the general, we break each stallion, mare and foal color possibility
  • What Color is this Horse? - Colors that are easy to get wrong
  • Colors in foals - Some colors are different at birth than they are in full grown horses
  • Colors that change - Some colors change over the life of the horse
  • Markings (blazes, sox, etc)
